5 Disadvantages of entering the legal profession later in age

Be it an undergraduate course or a post graduate one, going to a law school is the most practical and at the same time a difficult decision a person takes. When a law student graduates and comes to the field of law, he come across various aspects of this profession of which be wasn’t aware of. There are various things that a law graduate learns only after entering into the profession and not when he was studying it. It is very difficult for a young law graduate to make his name in this field. More difficult it is for the people who had taken the decision of doing law later in there life. It’s quite difficult for the younger ones to stand against the cut throat competition and rise there name in the field till they come up to a later age. But it is more difficult for the people to enters the field later in age. There are many disadvantages of entering the legal profession later in age.

Age Factor

There is a sought of biasness in the legal profession regarding the age. Many law firms and law professionals want to higher younger and less experienced workers who are willing to work on lesser salary. While age discrimination is a challenge for older workers, today’s tough job market only exacerbates the situation.

Opportunities

Graduates over age 40 may have fewer opportunities in the job market. Statistics show that it is more difficult for older lawyers to land a job at large law firms. According to the National Association for Law Placement, 53 percent of law graduates who are 36 years old and older and go into private practice go solo or join firms.

Trainability

Sometimes, employers fear to employee older employees, since it is quite often that they are more trainable and experienced in life. Also, a question of ego issues also arises when an older employee has to do task assigned by a younger employer.

Time Commitments

Being employed in a law firm means that you have to sacrifice your personal life, at least for the time you don’t establish yourself. If an employee of age 30-40 is employed, he will also have to sacrifice his family. A person of this age usually is married and may also have children. Such a person is not willing to sacrifice his family and this may eventually effect the efficiency of the company.

Career Longitivity

Law firms often hesitate to employee older employees since such people habe a very few years ahead in this profession. Many law firms seek employees willing to make a long-term commitment to the firm – lawyers who will stick around long enough to make partner and contribute to the long-term growth of the organization.
