Resort to Direct Talks: Pentagon advises India and China

A month has passed since the ongoing standoff between India and China in the Sikkim sector. This has often been observed as a classic tactic of China to abet the changing of the status quo of the area. India, on the other hand, has taken a unilateral action against the opposing country and has been since, maintaining its stand.

This has led to the growing tensions between both the powers, with strong assumptions of a budding war being around the corner.

Amidst such drastic situations, The Pentagon has intervened and has advised the powers to resort to direct talks before they take any such measures which are irreversible.

“We encourage India and China to engage in direct dialogue aimed at reducing tensions and free of any coercive aspects,” Gary Ross, a Defence Department spokesman stated in an interview.

The organization took a mediated approach and refused to speculate on the matter. A same stand has been observed on the side of the U.S. State Department.

In the previous years, many neighboring countries have accused China for adopting such coercive tactics to settle border disputes. This is also evident by the statement of the Top Commander of Pentagon, who accused China of exploiting its economic leverage as a way to advance their regional political objectives.

“As China’s military modernization continues, the United States and its allies and partners will continue to be challenged to balance China’s influence,” General Paul Selva, USAF, reportedly stated in a written response to the questions to the Senate Armed Services Committee for his nominee for reconfirmation as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Mr. Selva also claimed that deterring war is an exercise in influencing China’s decision calculus, making diplomacy preferable to conflict and managing crises in such a manner that they do not unintentionally escalate.

National Security Advisor, Mr. Ajit Doval, is set to visit Beijing, for the BRICS conference, to discuss the following matter.
